Everybody talks about Green Building—but what about outside the house or apartment?

Making the backyard, sideyard, and frontyard greener is the focus of The Sustainable Backyard Tour. The sustainable backyard concept is about converting unproductive, high-maintenance lawn and pavement into something more useful and restorative—both to the earth and the people it sustains.

A free, self-guided tour of private yards and gardens, The Sustainable Backyard Tour takes place this year on June 24th throughout St. Louis city and county. Join us at tonight’s Green Drinks for a preview of the event, meet some of the participants, pick up a map of featured yards, and take home some ideas for improving your greenspace organically!

When: Tuesday May 15th, 6:30 to 9pm

As summer begins, many of us will be gearing up for paddling trips on Missouri’s great rivers. So at this month’s Green Drinks, we’ll feature two of our finest – the Current and Jacks Fork Rivers, which make up the Ozark National Scenic Riverways.

It’s no wonder that this was the first national park area in the county to be established to protect a wild river system – the Current and Jacks Fork are sparkling, spring-fed rivers that draw more than a million visitors each year from St. Louis and beyond. The park is an international biodiversity hot spot and has towering limestone bluffs, hundreds of caves, and some of the largest springs in North America.

Come grab a drink and learn about the rivers, the threats to them, and what you can do to help protect them for the future. Kally Coleman of Friends of Ozark Riverways will be on hand to talk about the unique wonders of the area. Ted Mathys with Environment Missouri will discuss the statewide campaign to get stronger protections for the Riverways from the National Park Service this summer. And if it’s not sunny in the Ozarks, Dr. Alan Templeton will be out of the field and in the Bottleworks to talk about his famous collared lizards and the rich natural history of the Ozark Mountains! We’ll also have folks on hand to help set up your next float trip!

And we’ll have an Ozark area geologist to answer your questions about the landscape, as well as folks from St. Louis canoe and kayak shops to help you set up your next trip!

Speakers include:

Ted Mathys – Environment Missouri
Kally Coleman – Friends of the Ozark Riverways

Is re-localizing our economy possible when it seems like manufacturing job are disappearing?

If the doers and makers are the next movers and shakers, then who are the local green entrepreneurs doing the making? Beginning at 7pm, a panel discussion will feature three manufacturers of products in St. Louis who are designed from the ground up to be green. They have thrived over the economic downturn creating local manufacturing jobs.

What’s their secret? Come find out.
